Being a native of Spencer, WV I have fished and hunted Charles Fork Lake many, many times. It is an excellent destination for hunters and anglers alike. Charles Fork Lake is located approximately 2 miles southeast of Spencer on WV Route 36, a multi-use area with over 25 miles of trails surrounding a mile long lake that sports excellent fishing, canoeing, hiking and camping. Constructed in 1974 by the Army Corps of Engineers the lake is owned by the City of Spencer and maintained by the Friends of Charles Fork Lake. Fishing is excellent for largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, and tiger musky. The trails were developed by local mountain biking enthusiasts and are one of the most beautiful venues in the east. Charles Fork Lake is the site of the popular Tour de Lake Mountain Bike Race held annually. A concrete boat ramp and restrooms are available as well as pavillions with grills for a great family outing. The City has developed a new camping area with 9 available sites for vacationers and overnighters.
